12 Best Restaurants in Tangier: The Ultimate Guide on Where to Eat

1. Le Salon Bleu

Highlights: Mediterranean small plates, Moroccan main dishes.

Pricepoint: $$

Location:

With one of the top views in the city, Le Salon Bleu is among the best restaurants in Tangier. The multi-story restaurant serves up Mediterranean tapas and local delicacies with sprawling sea views. Arrive early to secure a seat on the highest terrace, which offers the best vistas. The food here is actually really good, given that it’s a pure tourist place. Opt for the selection of kemias (small plates) and choose from dishes like tomatoe salad, tabouli, hummus, eggplant, tapenade, carrots, and more.

2. Chez Hassan

Highlights: Charcol grilled skewers, authentic Moroccan specialties

Pricepoint: $$

Location:

Chez Hassan is one of the most popular restaurants in Tangier and with good reason. It has some of the most delicious food in the city, cooked over an outdoor grill by Hassan himself. Expect kebabs of all sorts, grilled fish, and couscous on Fridays. The place packs up very quickly, so arrive early to secure a seat. And if you get there too late, it’s worth the wait. The surrounding restaurants are nowhere close in terms of taste and food quality (trust me, I’ve tried them all). Eating here is one of the best things to do in Tangier.

3. Sandwich Amanouz

Highlights: Chicken sandwich, french fries, best cheap eat in Tangier

Pricepoint: $

Location:

Whenever I needed a quick bite in Tangier, Sandwich Amanouz was the go to spot. This quick eatery has, by far, the best sandwiches in all of Tangier, made with fresh local ingredients just up the street from the Grand Socco. The central location makes it convenient for a fast, budget friendly bite, and you’ll be in good company with the locals who frequent the spot. Order the chicken sandwich with fries inside and Algerian sauce. Either eat standing outside or walk over to the Mendoubia Garden for a picnic.

4. Fendak Dar Dbagh

Highlights: Best traditional Moroccan breakfast in Tangier

Pricepoint: $

Location:

I think out of all of the Tangier restaurants, this is my favorite (my boyfriend’s, too). It’s housed in the lush courtyard of a women’s co-op on the bottom of the medina, offering a heaping traditional Moroccan breakfast of breads, eggs, cheese, juice, coffee, and tea for a super budget price. The people working there are super friendly — when you’ve eaten your fill, be sure to tour the stalls for some of the most unique souvenirs in Morocco.

5. Hatakana Kasbah

Note: According to Google Maps, Hatakana Kasbah is closed. But for great Japanese food in Tangier, try Soju Sushi.

Highlights: Authentic Japanese in a cozy setting.

Pricepoint: $

Location:

This is one of my favorite places to eat in the city and definitely, the best restaurant in Tangier if you need a break from Moroccan food. Hatakana Kasbah is located on top of the medina and is owned and operated by a Japanese man who has brought ramen, fried rice, and other authentic specialties to Tangier. It’s a small restaurant with a couple of tables and counter seating where you can watch the chef put together fresh meals from scratch. Perfect for warming up on a chilly winter evening.

6. Le Bistrot du Petite Socco

Highlights: Tagines on a rooftop with a view of the Petite Socco

Pricepoint: $$

Location:

I ate here on my first night in Tangier on my first visit, so it holds a bit of a sentimental place in my heart. The food is quite good — have the beef tajine — but the true draw to this place is the view. Overlooking the Petite Socco, this is one of the best restaurants in Tangier to watch the world go by below.

7. Cafe Hafa

Highlights: Sprawling sea vistas, great drinks, decent food

Pricepoint: $$

Location:

This is the best restaurant in Tangier for a scenic view. Sitting a ten minute walk outside of the medina, Cafe Hafa is a mainstay of the city and a must-visit for a drink with a view. The food is nothing special but available if you’re peckish while soaking in the views. Have a traditional Moroccan breakfast in the morning, peanuts from local vendors in the afternoon, and a tajine with a side of sea views for dinner.

8. Cafe Panorama

Highlights: Beachfront cafe with a mix of Moroccan and Western dishes.

Pricepoint: $$

Location:

While most tourists make a beeline for the cafes in the medina, Cafe Panorama is where the locals hang out. This large space sits right on the city’s main beach and is one of the best restaurants in Tangier where you can dine al fresco. The terrace is huge, and the choices are abundant, spanning huge breakfast spreads to small plates, seafood, and ice cream sundaes. The times I’ve eaten here, the service wasn’t the best, but you’ll be too busy enjoying the beach views you’ll probably forget what you ordered, anyway.

9. Les Huitres

Highlights: Best place to eat seafood in Tangier.

Pricepoint: $$$

Location:

This is by far the best restaurant in Tangier where you can eat fresh seafood. It’s less than a ten minute taxi ride from the Grand Socco (or a 30 minute walk) and is well worth the adventure to gorge yourself on heaping plates of oysters, clams, jumbo prawns, squid, and high quality fish. The restaurant offers incredible value (6 oysters for 100 dirhams, or about $10), and the service is exceptional.

10. Gran Cafe Central

Highlights: Breakfast in a central location with great people watching.

Pricepoint: $$

Location:

Cafe Gran Central is a mainstay, and while it’s not necessarily one of the best restaurants in Tangier, it’s definitely worth a visit to see how the locals live. Situated in the center of the Petite Socco, Cafe Gran Central is the perfect place to have a leisurely breakfast — emphasis on leisurely, considering the service is relatively slow. Have a thousand hole pancake (locally called baghrir) smothered in Nutella and a strong Moroccan coffee or mint tea with a hefty side of people watching.

11. Restaurant Cafe Azur

Highlights: Mediterranean vibes overlooking the sea on the city walls.

Pricepoint: $$

Location:

Sea views, Mediterranean vibes, and excellent food are what you can expect from Cafe Azur, one of the best restaurants in Tangier. The top terrace overlooks the sea and the port, with views of Gibraltar on a clear day. If you’re exploring the city ramparts, this is the ultimate place to stop before heading back into the medina. It’s especially magical at sunset for a romantic dinner.

12. Cafe Kandinsky

Highlights: Brunch and American favorites

Pricepoint: $$$

Location:

If you find yourself outside of the medina hankering for Western dishes, Cafe Kandinsky is one of the best Tangier restaurants. Aside from the novelty of the restaurant being filled with classic cars and motorcycles, eat your fill of brunch dishes like avocado toast, eggs benedict, and omelets, or enjoy a lunch of pizza, pasta, and burgers. It’s pretty expensive, espeically when compared to local Moroccan restaurants, but hey, it’s worth the visit if you need a change of pace. It’s also next to the train station, making it a convenient stop if you’re transiting.
